The Marshmallow is Missing! Good Food, Even Better Story!

Every year my family has one Easter tradition that we always do; Resurrection Rolls! We initially found this idea on Pinterest approximately six years ago. Throughout the years we have adjusted and made it our own. The kids love the experience and reminder of the Easter story, but they also love the tasty cinnamon-sugar crescent rolls. We may have “Resurrection Rolls” during non-Easter seasons because they taste so good. Is there ever a bad time to remember the Resurrection?

Ingredients

  • half stick of melted butter
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 2 TBSP of cinnamon
  • one tube of crescent rolls
  • 8 large marshmallows

Process

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Mix cinnamon and sugar in a bowl. Melt butter in the microwave.
  • Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Unroll crescent rolls on paper.
  • Give each kid a marshmallow. This represents Jesus: white, pure, sinless.
  • Roll marshmallow in melted butter. This represents the oils that anointed His body.
  • Roll marshmallow in cinnamon sugar mixture. This represents the spices that adorned Jesus’ body.
  • Place one marshmallow in each crescent roll. Enclose marshmallow completely with crescent roll. (There are times when the marshmallow can ooze out of the crescent roll, but typically there a few that are perfect for the story purpose.) This is the cloth that Jesus’ body was wrapped in.
  • Place Jesus’ body in the tomb (oven). Bake for 12 minutes.
  • Open tomb (oven) and break open crescent roll. HE IS RISEN!

Empty Resurrection Roll!

This is such a fun Easter tradition for our family. We typically try to make them on Easter Sunday morning, but if that makes Easter too hectic then we may make them on Saturday. You can also incorporate Scripture by reading John 19:38-20:9 while the rolls cook. Another resource is reading The Jesus Storybook Bible stories that focus on the Resurrection. This can vary depending on the age of your children.
